IKI Medium Grants 2023 launched

The IKI Medium Grants are entering their fourth round and are looking for ideas for deforestation-free supply chain projects and piloting sub-national decarbonisation initiatives around the world.

Together with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) has launched a new call for funding for small-scale projects, with proposals being sought for projects in developing and emerging countries.

The selection procedure started on 5 April 2023 and the invitation to tender will run until 4 Juliy 2023. A maximum of 12 projects worth up to 8 million euros in public funding will be selected. A grant of between 300,000 and a maximum of 800,000 euros may be granted per project. Work on projects funded through the programme should be completed within a period of 24 months to a maximum of 36 months, with no follow-up funding from the IKI.

The first phase of the procedure is designed as a call for project ideas, with interested implementing organisations invited to submit innovative project outlines. Project outlines undergo several stages of formal and expert review before being selected. All lead implementing organisations that submitted project outlines will be notified about the outcome of the initial evaluation in writing, with a request that they then submit a detailed project proposal

Funding objectives

The IKI Medium Grants programme welcomes the submission of applications involving the use of pilot projects and aim at capacity-building in partner countries. The funding priorities are as follows:

  1. Piloting of sub-national decarbonisation initiatives
  2. Innovative model projects with smallholders and cooperatives to strengthen deforestation-free supply chains

IKI Medium Grants funds organisations and institutions based in Germany

IKI Medium Grants support project activities that address innovative, bottom-up contributions to implementing the Paris Agreement and the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Those eligible for funding through this programme include non-profit civil society organisations (non-governmental organisations, associations, foundations, think tanks) and academic institutions (universities and research institutions), as well as non-profit companies.  At the time of the first disbursement of a grant awarded, the implementing organisation is required to have a permanent business establishment, branch, or other facility serving the activities of the grant recipient in Germany. These organisations must enter into a partnership with one or two local implementing organisations based in the implementing country or region.

English-language project outlines can be submitted until 4 July 2023 (12.00 p.m CEST) via the IKI online platform.

All important information about the call, including the funding announcement, is available on the IKI Medium Grants 2023 overview page on the IKI website.

Online seminar on the call

For interested organisations, an online seminar will be held in English on 4 May 2023 as part of the ideas competition. In this seminar, the IKI Medium Grants will introduce themselves and provide general information on the selection process.
