Synthetic fuels from Germany: currently 19 power-to-liquid plants in planning and operation

The PtX Lab Lausitz presents a first current overview of the PtL market ramp-up.

In May 2023, the PtX Lab Lausitz published an initial overview map of existing and planned plants for the production of power-to-liquid fuels in Germany. This is based on the current project announcements and summarizes the current status of the PtL market ramp-up in the Federal Republic of Germany

The targeted production volume of the individual plants differs significantly, in each case also depending on the stage of development as well as the goals of the projects. While existing production facilities have so far been producing a few hundred metric tons per year, elsewhere the future target is currently up to 200,000 metric tons.

It is also clear that even with a significant increase in production volume in the coming years, manufacturers in Germany are still a long way from achieving the quantities needed to convert aviation, for example, to the use of synthetic kerosene. Around 10 million metric tons of synthetic kerosene per year would be needed to fully supply all German airports. The switch will, of course, take place gradually: Germany currently plans to blend around 50,000 tons of synthetic kerosene in 2026, 100,000 tons in 2028 and 200,000 tons in 2030. Further blending quotas for synthetic kerosene are currently being discussed in the EU.

About the production map

The data processed in the map is based on publicly available information as of April 2023. All information is provided without guarantee, but will be updated regularly from now on. The PtX Lab Lausitz will continue to record ongoing plans and developments and publish updates of the map. The Lab accepts corresponding information at any time.

The site at the Lausitz location

The location for the PtX Lab Lausitz's own demonstration plant will be announced in 2023. Currently, the scientific investigations are underway at the possible settlement points in Guben, Jänschwalde and Schwarze Pumpe. The goal and unique selling point of the facility will be to discuss the technical and regulatory conditions for the most sustainable PtL production possible. In the course of this, the development of PtX technologies in Lusatia will be promoted - as part of the structural change with the phase-out of coal mining in the region.
